In Vivo Imaging of Human Sarcomere Twitch Dynamics in Individual Motor Units
Motor units comprise a pre-synaptic motor neuron and multiple post-synaptic muscle fibers. Many movement disorders disrupt motor unit contractile dynamics and the structure of sarcomeres, skeletal muscle's contractile units. Despite the motor unit's centrality to neuromuscular physiology, no extant technology can image sarcomere twitch dynamics in live humans. We created a wearable microscope e...
متن کاملSpeech recognition using syllable-like units
It is well known that speech is dynamic and that framebased systems lack the ability to realistically model the dynamics of speech. Segment-based systems o er the potential to integrate the dynamics of speech, at least within the phoneme boundaries, although it is di cult to obtain accurate phonemic segmentation in uent speech. In this paper we propose a new approach which uses syllable-like un...
متن کاملMyocardial cell and sarcomere lengths in the normal dog heart.
The purpose of this study was to measure myocardial cell and sarcomere lengths at the bases and apices of the right (RV) and left ventricle (LV) of 4 normal canine hearts. The RV and LV were simultaneously fixed with glutaraldehyde at zero transmural pressure. Sections of trabeculae carneae were taken from the 1 cm cut at the bases (free wall) of the RV and LV. They were further fixed with osmi...
متن کاملThe Minimum Shared Edges Problem on Grid-Like Graphs
We study the NP-hard Minimum Shared Edges (MSE) problem on graphs: decide whether it is possible to route p paths from a start vertex to a target vertex in a given graph while using at most k edges more than once. We show that MSE can be decided on bounded grids in linear time when both dimensions are either small or large compared to the number p of paths. On the contrary, we show that MSE rem...
متن کاملRelation of muscle cell contraction and calcium distribution in sarcomere.
A model of activation of muscle contraction has been proposed. It is based on calcium diffusion and binding to specific regulatory sites in a sarcomere. Calcium ions activate interactions of contractile proteins and thus the generation of force. The model quantifies the relation between calcium released from intracellular stores and the elicited force.
